When Aaron Reed started his construction supply business in 2014, he spent years working to make just $50,000 in sales.

Last year, his company produced $23 million in revenue.

Reed’s company, Reed Construction, is a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, or DBE, a governmental designation intended to help fight discrimination against women and racial minorities in various industries. Inclusion in state and federal DBE programs provides opportunities for minorities who own at least 51 percent of a small business.

Case of Intentional Investment

In line with its mission to uplift Black and Brown communities economically, the Riverside Center for Innovation (RCI) recognizes the need for consistent, aligned sources of capital that would enable Black and Brown entrepreneurs to create mature, sustainable companies in Pittsburgh. 17 Asset Management (17AM) was engaged to co-design an optimal financial structure to provide capital for entrepreneurs that receive business development services from RCI.

RCI’s Equitable Entreprenuers Facility (REEF)

REEF will transform Pittsburgh into a prosperous place that leverages its built environment and mobility sectors to protect its most vulnerable populations. Both will lead to more equitable access to safe housing, transit, walkable streets, environmentally sustainable environments, healthy food, and welcoming spaces.

Pittsburgh’s Inequities Report

Pittsburgh's AMLON women make only 59 cents and Pittsburgh's Black women make only 54 cents to every dollar Pittsburgh’s White men make. Moreover, Pittsburgh's Black women are five times more likely to live in poverty than Pittsburgh's White men. These inequalities are not limited to income; comparable patterns exist across the examined domains. However, we also find inequalities vary in their extent and direction.
